Militants blow-up oil pipelines in Bayelsa PDF Print E-mail

Hostilities of militants in the Niger Delta region seems unending as youths suspected to be militants in the early hours of Tuesday, blew-up oil pipelines simultaneously in two different locations in Bayelsa State. The Guardian gathered that three major oil pipelines affected in the attack belong to the Nigeria Agip Oil Company (NAOC) located in Brass local Government and Akassa in Southern Ijaw local area all in Bayelsa State.

The Co-ordinator of Bayelsa Volunteer, the state funded security outfit, Chief Joshua Benemesia, told The Guardian in Yenagoa, that the militants went in 12 boats to blow up the pipelines at about 1. 30 am on Tuesday. He said the militants have threatened further attack until their unspecified demands are met. The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) said it had attacked pipelines in Bayelsa State. Government officials confirmed that the attacks had taken place in the Brass and Akassa areas without giving details of the damage caused. The Press Secretary to the state governor Mr. Ekiyor Welson, who also confirmed the attack, said the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Dr Boladei Igali would give details of the attack.

However an attempted to contact the SSG on phone was futile as his phone rang several times without a reply. The Bayelsa State Commissioner of Police Mr. Julian Okpalake, in a telephone chat said he will contact the Area Commander Brass to investigate the incident. The militants say they will continue their renewed campaign "indefinitely with attacks on all pipelines, platforms and support vessels". It is not clear why the militants have stepped up their campaign after a lull in violence during the general elections, but they say they want to remind the incoming government that the Niger Delta question has not left with President Obasanjo.
